I did a search on Pinterest to see what ideas I could find there and there wasn't very many for a 50th birthday. Here are a few things I did find.

Just try searching birthday or looking through the wedding/events section on Pinterest. Usually ideas for parties can be altered to fit any event... Just an idea!

You can have some of her friends/family fill out like a questionarre thing about your mom or just have them write something to her. I did this when my mom turned 50 & most of the letters made us both cry!

The photos in the shape of the 50 is awesome!! You've got to do that! Another idea might be making all of your mom's favorite foods or having a potluck and having each guest bring one of her favorite dishes...or putting a candy type of bar out with all of her fave candies!
I'm with the majority: that 50-shaped photo is sublime!! I would say use her favorite color as the main color. I'm sure it'll be great, no matter what you choose to do. :)
